Retracing footsteps at Sligo Gaol
We had an interesting visit to the jail on Sunday by sisters Deirdre Foley and Theresa Finan (pictured above). Their father Henry (Harry) William Doherty was a prisoner in the jail during the Irish Civil War. Harry was sentenced to death for having a gun in his possession.
Harry Doherty is in the centre of the photo, taken from Michael Farry's The Irish Revolution, 1912-23, Sligo.
He served his sentence in Sligo Gaol before he was finally released in 1922. This was the first time his daughters had seen the inside of the jail where their father was held.
