An Evening on Sligo Gaol at the Hawk's Well
Friends of Sligo Gaol were delighted to participate in a special evening on Sligo Gaol entitled 'The Way We Were' which was hosted by the Hawk's Well Theatre on Wednesday, 23rd September 2015.
Speakers on the night included County Heritage Officer Siobhán Ryan who gave a fascinating insight into the built heritage of Sligo Gaol while Sligo historian Michael Farry gave an insightful talk on some of the political prisoners held in Sligo Gaol over the years.
Friends of Sligo Gaol’s Dan Scannell (former director of Castlerea Prison) did us proud with his enthralling talk about the everyday life of a prisoner.
The evening finished up with a questions and answers session with the panel chaired by Sligo’s Columb McBride.
Thank you to the many people who shared all their memories of the Gaol with us on the evening, its events like this which allow us to work to build a social history of one of the most important heritage buildings in Sligo.
We would like to say a special thanks also to Sligo Central Library and Museum for allowing us to display original artefacts from the Gaol (see photographs below). A big thank you also to the Hawk’s Well Theatre for hosting the evening.
You can see some recordings of the night on our Video section of our History Page.
